Tom, Personally I use FLTK as my GUI toolkit, it is C/C++ based and really easy to use, and is also cross platform (Linux / Mac OSX /Windoze). http://www.fltk.org/
For people moving from a windoze based environment a good thing to try is Borland Kylix 3. Kylix is the linux version of Borland C++ 6 and Delphi combined. There is a "free" version that allows you to produce OSS (open source software) of if you pay the money then you get more features and you can release your software under any licence you want. The free version is good for evaluating it. http://www.borland.com/ Mike.
