I can tell you that wholesale prices for n800c are around $3500 excl.
And that is from one of the largest wholesalers in NZ.

As a reseller, I can find prices for a variety of models...
Most laptops these days have no issues running linux these days too by
the way.

I haven't looked at the prices yet, but I have some dealer friends & a
student friend of mine says that his department is spending ~3k on his
laptop (which is an n800c) - so I figure it's possible.  And prices are
always falling.  Of course my student friend may be getting bulk
discount or something, in which case I won't get that model :)
