With regard to DVD watching you have two options Recompile the apps (mplayer or xine) 
from source with all
libraries installed or seeing you runing mdk9.1 going to http://plf.zarb.org and 
either add plf as a source using
Easy Urpmi and installing plf's Mplayer build with DVD support.
urpmi mplayer
or Download all the mplayer packages and dependences from the FTP dumping them in a 
directory and running
urpmi *.rpm
in that directory.
Either way will give you Mplayer with DVD support, Win32 codec support, Quicktime 
support the works.
As for the dvd writer try k3b.
