i'm not sure if you've seen a reply to this already.  My mailserver
(hosted in Seattle) died for a bit, and mail is just starting to get
through now.

Have a quick look through /etc/X11/XF86Config, and see if the install
messed up X.  I find debian doesn't preserve that file, and I keep
having to re-edit it (remind me to set up a diversion...)  The other
thing to look at is /var/log/X-whatever.  It's handy for telling you why
X failed to start.  Actually, do those in the opposite order.  Log file
first, config second.

things to watch for in the config are the proper driver (nvidia rather
than nv), and to make sure that GLCore and dri aren't being loaded,
since nvidia handles these separately.
