Sorted it

I "missed-cued" when I was using emacs to edit the XF86Config-4 file and
stuffed up the first line of the XF86Config-4 file (with -"[[A[[A").

I'm fairly new to linux so your reply was a really helpful as I'm still
finding out what does what/lives where etc.
