Being old-ish and grey-ish I've sen this problem before. It happened
with floppies.

I have some floppies dating from the 80's that are still readable. But
the majority of floppies made in the last 5 years or so are illegible.

I think it comes with floppies being made down to a price, rather than
up to a standard. The old ones worked, the new cheaper ones don't.

It seems to be the getting same with CDs.
