That's right. Paradise cable modems connect to a computer or router, but not to a switch or hub - ie it has to connect to something "pingable". The paradise techies, when diagnosing problems, can ping either the cable modem itself or the PC (or router) behind it. The static IP address they assign is for the customer's PC (or router).
