Not in the NZ setup

The cablemodems currently in use can do lots of cool stuff, but a lot of
it is turned off.
The Surfboards can deal with 30 or 31 individual public IPs, connecting
each to a different mac address inside the network. However their setup
in New Zealand is to look for the first mac address on booting, and to
use that.
Internally the cablemodem has its own IP in the range 172.16.0.0/12 but
theres no way to find it (unless your friendly local TC person tells
you). But thats useless anyway cos theres no way to talk with it.
On the other hand, you could pair the cablemodem with any of
*nix box doing NAT
Windows box doing "Internet Connection Sharing"
Hardware NAT box (like a ADSL router without the ADSL modem part)
Or do nothing - to switch the net conenction you'd need to power off
the modem, unplug/replug, then power it on. Not the most flexible of
solutions but workable.
I've not used the newer ones via their USB connector, only ever
ethernet.
