Bad move. At 70deg your CPU will die an early death. Anti-static straps are $20, not exactly a lot. It doesn't have to be clean-room, but trying to keep it clean is a good idea. Dropping the paste side on the carpet is out. The readily-avilable white paste (not dirt-cheap) might not be as good as AMD's stuff but will be much better than what you've got now.
