My mistake, did you use Win fdisk or Linux to delete the partitions ?.
What's Linux fdisk say about the extended partition and the 3 virtual partitions ?.

I used DiskDrake in expert mode...

Did you use Mdk DiskDrake expert mode ?.

You say you are unable to extend the extended partition to include other virtual partitions ?. If read you correctly you cannot change the extended partition size with virtual partitions in it with fdisk!.

I am a little hesitant to be playing with deleting other partitions. I in fact DO have data I want on the other logical partitions. I can offload it to somewhere else, but it (a logical partition) also contains my linux swap. I tried to delete/change that once before and ended up having to do a complete reinstall (though last time it was to increase the size of the swap, and I really didn't know what I was doing...). I will try with the M$ fdisk... don't really want to though...

ps as it stands I have
Part 1 = XP
Part 2 = /boot
Part 3 = /
Part 4 = extended
4.1 Linux swap
4.2 fat32
I had a 4.3, which was the 32gig fat32. The prob is that I can't extend the extended again...

I would delete the all the virtual and the extended partition (if you have
nothing in them) with Linux's fdisk, then put them in again with Linux.

That's all i can think of for now.

Unfortunately I wasn't very clear in my original post. The thing is that
I am not even able to format a partition to install another OS on, let
alone put it in grub or lilo! It seems that I am unable to extend the
extended partition to include other virtual partitions. I have 32 gig of
free space but I can't create the partition. It was originally formatted
in fat32 but I deleted the partition. I think it may be impossible to
add an extra partition once it has been set up like this. Any suggestions?
