Nope sky via telstra comes as a encoded mpeg?? or similar (iirc) stream
via their cable service ...as the net is via the same link I was
wondering if since im subscribed anyhow , wether there is anything that
will decode on the fly (on the local machine) from the incoming
stream....if that makes any sense at all ...so effectivly I can forward
to the likes of mplayer or xine in a window .....

You would have to split the cable before the cable modem, as the cable modem filters out all the traffic except for the data and converts that into ethernet traffic (AFAIK)

I know some channels like sky1 and the program guide and probably more are definitely not encrypted as my flatmate has had them on his TV with a splice before the decoder.

Also the sky channels like sport and movies can be purchased seperately from telstra, and switched on and off just by ringing them up (for a price) so I assume they either change something in the decoder via special signals through the cable or they stop the stream before it gets there. If the channel is not enabled it shows previews, so I would lean towards the second option, unless there is a default channel which it goes to if it can't decrypt the incoming transmission.
