My downloads for my upgrades seem to slow down the kids online games on
their computers.

As far as I understood nice does not effect the download - does it?

Anyway - who pays the bills in our house?

You can both have the best of both worlds if you were to start your emerges 
thus:

su -
Password: secretblah
nohup nice 18 emerge --update package 2&1> ~/emerge.log &
logout

The update will now take place in the backgound at a very low priority, and 
probably won't even be noticed.
