Hi Nick, Yes i did read the URPMI, RPM, Xfree86, X, .Xauth, and a number of other man pages.
the helpful part for me was when i tried to see what packages of the X system where loaded and it told me that the xfree86-server-4.3-8mdk package wasnt installed. thing is _why_ was it unloaded in the first place ??? I think i did miss a some thing out (an attempt to stop myself from rambling <g>). I preferred to use the GUI not sure on manually pppding ( and yes i looked at the man pages and my only attempt locked the system up - more than likely my miss use). got a copy of the server rpm via windoze off the net. dave.
