My scheme of choice for a client PC is;

/dev/hda1 - swap  - double your RAM
/dev/hda2 - /     - 2GB (depending on how much you like to install)
/dev/hda3 - /home - the rest.

This keeps it simple and allows you to easily change distro / upgrade / screw up
your root partition while keeping all your personal stuff.
