In the US (and brown-nosing other countries) the DMCA will prohibit anyone from trying to figure out the file formats used by your applications. So you'll have to continue buying PowerPoint and the Windows OS for ever, just to be able to access your data. The only way out of the lock-in is to reject the situation itself.
