Notebook IP address 192.168.0.9/255.255.255.0. It has an onboard realtek RTL-8139 network module, the hardware control centre correctly identifies it and lists the 8139too module (driver?).

Not good. Try pinging the broadcast address from the notebook.

Then tell us what your routing table looks like (route -e).
You also might want to check dmesg and tell us what 8139too spits out when it loads.
Next, make sure that there is no firewall absorbing all the ICMP requests (external pings).

I just installed a new version and found, surprise, my network stopped running.
Ensure you have gone into (this is version 4.5 ZA) the firewall screen and the IP address of your laptop is entered in the Trusted zone otherwise ZA will say it is in the Internet zone and do nasty things to it.
