I can ping localhost and ping the IP address on the notebook OK. I can't ping further than that, nor can I ping the notebook from another

Not good.
Try pinging the broadcast address from the notebook.

machine (when the notebook is booted under linux). I don't know what to do now, and don't want to give up! Can anyone help me?

Then tell us what your routing table looks like (route -e).

You also might want to check dmesg and tell us what 8139too spits out when it loads.

Next, make sure that there is no firewall absorbing all the ICMP requests (external pings).

Cheers, Rex

Pings not being absorbed locally by zonealarm pro - I can ping between 2 desktops, one running xp, the other running mandrake. Can't ping the notebook from either.

ping 192.168.0.255 -c 5 -b
that works fine.
pinging other machines gives Destination Host Unreachable (they are definitely there!)

[when looking at the dmesg output, I see references to sound, which is also not working (onboard too), not sure if that's relevant]

dmesg grep | 8139too
