I am using DSE's RJ45 plugs on fixed CAT5e wiring quite happily and without packet loss (100M though, don't have any giga cards). Are you sure mismatching the crimp type would make it so bad as to be unusable? At a bet, Yuri got his wires mixed up somehow (the curse of every electronic circuit).
