As I posted the original question, I must admit I have been following this 
thread fairly closely, (and have posted this on the original thread)

here's my 2c worth:

I would have to say that I accept most of the comments made regarding the 
undesirability of "unsolicited advertising" on the list, in principal

In this particular case Jason's suggestion/plug regarding the card -reader 
offered a viable solution to the original post

In my case this is not quite what I was after (especially as I already have 
one of these fine products!)

It has been my experience as an avid list reader that Jason is one of several 
CLUG list supporters that has been very quick to offer timely and helpful 
advice and assistance not only to me but also to many others, (including 
providing me with a copy of this Mepis distro). 

For this reason to my mind the odd plug is more than acceptable given the 
level of support offered by Jason and his company, to the Canterbury Linux 
Community.

PS.  I'm still working my way through the original camera/permissions issue
