Occasionally that won't work, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 will get you to a console. Then you can run top or ps and kill away.
Alt-Fx where 1 <= x <= 6 will get you to another virtual console. Alt-F7 will get you back to X. At least, that is the common setup. I think Knoppix has X on Alt-F5, just to be different.

Just a useless piece of info for you...
the x mentioned above is the number of gettys started in /etc/inittab. When X is started, it uses the lowest available screen for its display. Hence the variableness of the F button you find it under.
