If things are really getting messy and nothing else seems to work then there 
is one other thing that can be worth doing if the kernels stillup and 
running.

Alt + SysRq
then while holding them down. In sequence with a couple of second's pause 
between each keypress type. (on some systems only one of the ALT's works left 
for me)

They're kernel level commands to kill all process, sync the harddrives, 
unmount them and then reboot the computer. Which is alot better than the 
reset switch.
