Thanks Guys. I'm going to write this lot in the notebook I carry in the
laptop bag. When X crashes, we have to resort to charcoal scratchings on
the cave wall.

Occasionally that won't work, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 will get you to a
console. Then you can run top or ps and kill away.
Alt-Fx where 1 <= x <= 6 will get you to another virtual console.
Alt-F7 will get you back to X. At least, that is the common setup. I
think Knoppix has X on Alt-F5, just to be different.
