Hey Robert! I actually moved about 2 months ago to Papanui...it seems there is nothing wrong with my mouse, because a flatmates 2-button PS2 mouse did the same thing.
On the advice of Nick and others I turned HWCursor off in X config, but it seemed to make no difference. 30 minutes later suddenly the daft pointer starts behaving itself all of a sudden! Anyone out there remember how the X-files theme goes? :-)
