It usually will jump to the right and up. Two things: The protocol as defined in the /etc/X11/XF86Config Mouse section is wrong. Unlikely because it has been working. A wire in the cable has broken. They are not everlasting and the continual flexing eventually hardens the copper which then breaks. Happened to me more than one over the years.
