Sorry you're wrong there and the above is misleading. The gimp started
as the *general* image manipulation program, most likely primarily on
Linux, but I believe also on Solaris. It became a GNU project only much
later, at which point the name changed to *gnu* image manipulation
program. I can smell some politics there...
