IMHO there is nothing wrong with discussing GNU or linux or BSD or Hurd or free/open software that runs on kernels other than linux (eg BSD, OS-X windows or os/2 or whatever takes your fancy) on this list. What we don't need is a whole lot of "Linux wouldn't have made it without the GNU tools" vs "The GNU tools were only made popular because Linux gave them a kernel to run on" arguments. FWIW both those arguments clearly have an element of truth, and an element of unreality (Linus could have used another compiler and GNU tools were already firmly established on other unices). So What! The point is that OSOTW [1] and DPOTCS [2][3] have exploded as a reuslt of a combination of many free/open software projects, all of which deserve support and recognition, Changing the name of this group, or forming another group (thereby adding to the world's population of User Groups and Mailing Lists) is not going to do anything positive. There are few enough "ports of call' for people in Cantarbury for people to get help, meet like minds, socialise, and perform the other roles of this list and the meetings that were spawned from it. Creating another similar, but separate group, will just fragment a group that IMHO serves its "members" well. Don't forget if you really want to get into the politics and aren't satisfied with the level of debate here, there is already the NZOSS list. I just don't think the world needs more groups and mailing lists. I think this group serves well. If an evening discussing "GNU" is wanted, lets do it, but I'll wager the drinks bill that the conversation will not be any different to the conversations we have at meetings already.
