Um! Sorry, it wasn't really clear what I was getting at. Soooo...

I didn't mean to suggest that The GIMP and GNOME would exist if the
Linux kernel hadn't come along. I _did_ mean to suggest that The GIMP
and GNOME would not have happened without GNU, and they don't mind
pointing it out. (It matters to them. Why, do you suppose?)

Also worth pointing out: the vast majority of GNU software is not Linux
specific.
