Here is a summary of the five registrations we have had for tonight.Re Mandrake laptop:
Perennial issues like modems (2) and getting stuff off the cd, as well
as sound and vision on an iBook. This email is also a call for our more
experienced people to be there tonight if possible and help the newbies
out.
Also, all are welcome, oldies and newbies. there will be a few machines there, including Rik's mandrake laptop, so if you just want some lessons on where to find stuff on the system, how to add users, whatever, just come along :-)
its not too late to register extra problems for the workshop either.
Have installed updates as per Fest installer disk, & am making good progress. The more I use Mdk10, the more I like it (GNOME 2.4 goes well; Midnight Commander has display errors under KDE). Have just burned & tested my 1st CD (K3B)! :-)
A few Qs:
Having installed hsf modem rpm package, what happens next (Control Centre - Hardware listing of modem still says "no module")?
The alternative, cardbus modem awaits too - Control Centre - Services says pcmcia is not running, but won't start it either - should that be done somewhere else? (the Fedora equivalent actually completes these sort of jobs) pcmcia detects nothing & doesn't seem to start at boot time.
Mentioning pcmcia modems here because..
I am at this stage with SuSE too - we need SuSE expertise along tonight, or to wait until the SuSE session on 26 August. The SLmodem driver hangs the system, & I haven't seen a Conexant one working yet either.Douglas ========
Modem:
Successfully dials Clear, but doesn't get on.
kppp reports "no carrier", but this is not the case, as I can hear it on the phone.
ifup reports error 8, which I think is the error reported by pppd, being "The connect script failed (returned a non-zero exit status)".
I have yet to do brain-dead checks such as "did I type the password correctly", and haven't done any Googling yet - so don't publish any of this lot. I'll post questions if I come up blank.
Sound:
Fails to recognise the soundchip - SiS630 - that was happily recognised by Mandrake 9.2.
I haven't done even basic Googling on this one yet either. I will endeavour to before Thursday - though this will involve saving the symptoms onto USB drive, booting up into Windows, yawn, ...

I still do not have a working modem on my Acer Aspire 1703sc. The modem is recognised by Suse but does not appear to be dialing out...it hangs on'Initialising Modem'. I've tried all the options I can find (bear in mind my newbie status) but with no joy...searching on the net with my dial-up connection has also taken a great deal of time with nothing to show for it to date.
Something that may get you up & running quicker is to obtain a pcmcia modem (if you have the slot) - c$35 2nd-hand from the Computer Broker, I believe. You may want to get one for tonight.
Daniel ====== When I start my PC I get a command prompt asking for my password. When I type my password nothing happens (the prompt is waiting for instructions...

I missed the installfest but went ahead and installed Debian myself on a PPC 500MHz iBook. Although it boots, the video drivers must be wrong as the right hand side of the screen is blank and the bottom of the screen is a duplication of the top, leaving the GUI interface in all it's glory to the top lefthand portion of the screen!
The sound, also, doesn't work, but I'm not that bothered about that.
