I'll take the easy one, without checking the other replies
in this thread :-)

eth0 is the network outlet on your laptop. eth0 = ethernet
0. If you had two network outlets then the second one would
be eth1.
If your laptop does not have a network (LAN) cable plugged
into it then it will "fail".
If it still fails when you _are_ plugged into a LAN, then it
may be because there is no DHCP server on your LAN segment.
