You can with GDM with the "--no-console" option on the client so it does not start up a login screen. You will always have to start a display manager on the server so it can launch the XDMCP greeter.
OK, we might be getting closer. My workstation starts an X11 server which gives me a grey-field screen. Then it later starts KDM, which asks the console X11 server to display the login page &c. This KDM has XDMCP=false.
It could *also* start a --no-console GDM, that has XDMCP=true ... the Explora will locate this instance, and display it's output?
