It sounds like you need to set /etc/modules.conf up correctly.
'/etc/init.d/alsa start' just restores/saves the mixer settings, etc.

The playback speed problem is almostly definitely a result of your music
being one sample rate (probably 44.1kHz) and the card accepting only a
different sample rate (probably 48kHz).

A quick fix might be to check the configuration of your sound daemon (if
you're using one), and see if you can tell it to up/down sample.  With
esd, you can specify '-r 48000' to upsample everything to 48Khz.

Yes, there's plenty.  Take a look at the main ALSA site[0], and then have a
look at the ALSA wiki[1].  Unfortunately, the mailing list archives are
missing or password protected (depending on which one you pick), so
they're not much use.  The wiki has plenty of information, though, so
take a look at the VIA/vt82xx related stuff there and you should be well
on your way.
