Yea, the M key is for Mute... took me a while to figure that one out I
ended up installing gnome-alsamixer and noticed the Mute checkbox was
ticked.

First stating the obvious, check that XMMS isn't using OSS, you should
set it to alsa, or if you use it esound.

If its already set to esound, kill esd or install libesd-alsa0 (esound
aka "gnome sound daemon" in the gnome settings) and test out XMMS
outputting straight to alsa.

Lastly if that still doesn't fix the problem have a shot at playing the
file with totem or mplayer or alsaplayer instead, it could be a file
format issue rather than a sound card issue and an alternate app might
play the file properly.
