I'd just like to encourage you to hang in there too, Kevin. I'm perhaps in a similar situation, and have given myself permission to stay with it for 2 years before deciding to give up completely, and am glad I'm still trying.
Aside from knowing (pretty much) no programming, I can do almost anything in windows, yet find myself almost a complete learner with matters *nix. The learning curve is steep, in my experience, as the differences are significant. With lots of reading, attending the gatherings when I can, and help here in response to my "dumb questions", I can look back now and see that I am getting there, even if slower than I would like. My main problem is not enough time in the day to play with this stuff - so patience is required.
