you should also check in with the dunedin linux user group and meet up
with them. they are a very nice bunch and will help you come to grips
with linux. (yes, this email is coming from austria, but trust me, i
have been to new zealand. i enjoyed the hospitality of members of the
lugs in dunedin and christchurch so i know why i can recommend them :-)

dunlug also has a nice library of linux related books.
