DNS is only useful if you have a domain name to play with. When you buy
a domain, you virtually always get a DNS service with it - using the
registry's DNS server is more reliable and a lot faster. If you go to
places like dyndns.org you also get supplied with DNS service (in fact
it costs extra not to use it :) ).

If you want to run a DNS server just for the fun of it, the easiest is
on SuSE to install package bind. This comes with its own automatically
maintained chroot setup, and you only have to create one simple zone
file by means of editing one of the templates from the doc directory.
Remember to enable ports "domain" on udp and tcp in your firewall. You
can read the bind docs and fiddle the master config file as you feel
inclined.
