Because it's the rule of the internet. Period.  :)

The internet was designed to be redundant. If one of your DNS servers
disappears, the other will be queried. If there was only one, you would
de facto no longer be reachable (as no-one else knows what your IP
number is). Microsoft was offline once for 3 days because a techie
stuffed up the DNS, the servers were fine...
