Ah, found a Debian box with X installed. There's a /etc/X11/Xsession.d directory that looks like what you want--drop a script in there and it will be run for any user when X starts. See Xsession(5) for details.
OK, I put my xset command into there, and it was executed (there was also a logger invoke in there) ... now I have to wait a few minutes to see if it worked!
Actually, I do want to do this for just one user, but have no objection to having it for the whole server.
My current ~/.Xsession file is just the name of the application I'm running (Opera, actually, in kiosk mode). Can I put other commands in there?
I'm asking rather than trying, because of the long wait per iteration required to test!
