> Volker: Are you intending to talk about mail servers of the port 25 kind?
No, my part was the procmail one. Because by itself it's not enough for an evening, it was lumped with another talk also related to email, so Jim's talking about uhm I think it was local imap server. I am planning on briefly mentioning "MTA", "LDA", and mail retrieval with fetchmail/getmail to show where procmail sits in the scheme of things. It would be good to mention the alternative arrangement of running an actual mailserver and using the ISP as backup mx, without going into the setup details too much (personally I wouldn't recommend that setup to beginners because of the security risk) - that's Jim's part. The guts however is how to use procmail. As usual, everything depends on what everyone wants. > Rik asked for mail > storage details, particularly with regard to IMAP, but I haven't asked > Volker yet how that aspect of things would sit with the intended > procmail coverage. When the email arrives (pushed or pulled), you filter it via procmail and store it into your local imap store or whatever other mailfolders you want, procmail doesn't care. Of course "local mail folders" and "local imap store" can be the same thing, but don't have to. If you pull your mail, you run anti-spam/virus from procmail. If you run a server, there are a few more anti-spam options, plus obviously still all the procmail ones. Jim, are you covering any specific MTA? If so, postfix would be cool...
