Comes from the Kandalf's Useful Tips that I have on my new SuSE installation on my notebook (which went really smoothly by the way). Couldn't tell you how to turn the tips on if you've already turned off the "show tips on startup" option (no doubt it's simple to find in google or someone will just reply and say).
Clicking the maximise button with the right mouse button gives a horizontal maximise, with the middle button a vertical one.
