The *movement* of the mouse is what does the "pointing". The click of a button initiates an *action*. For your analogy, a one button mouse is like being able to point to an object and say "beep", while a 3-button mouse is like being able to say one of "beep" "blarg" or "foo". With a command-line interface, of course, you can say whatever you want.
