I'm using Debian woody, with GNOME 2.6.1 installed under /usr/local/gnome

For me, a similar (maybe the same) problem was solved by installing the
"shared-mime-info" package from freedesktop.org.

testing includes a package with the same name, so I'd check that you
have that...
