Thanks, Timothy, but I have solved it... I think I even posted a message to that effect.
I changed the theme in the theme manager, and I was graced with icons. (I had tried to change theme in the gui gconf editor thing, but that didn't seem to work (but there were only two themes in there, and perhaps it was really the same theme, 'default' and something else... more themes came when I installed 'gnome'.)
