It drops root privs as soon as it has got access to the hardware.

Do you mean that you can only use it if logged in as 'root'?

Yes, that is what I meant. User startx did fail each time.

If they are not there atm. add these lines to the end of the XF86Config file:

Section "DRI"
       Mode 0666
EndSection

Went to try this, but cannot run Gentoo now. Hdd amendment since install has shifted it from hda6 to hda7 - I guess this would affect it internally. The reiserfs was unhappy before then anyway, & now it says "Filesystem couldn't be fixed :( " - looks like a reinstall before 27 Oct (fun fun fun). Ext3 of course!! :-)
