The scanModem script will tell you.
  ( It is not possible to get _all_ WinModems to go under Linux )

Have you got a diagnostic LiveCD ( such as Knoppix ) available?

Will said 'puter read DVDs? (because I have a DVD stuffed full of diagnostics)
Otherwise I can cut CDs as needed.
