Hi,Sounds as if the cable is not a 'cross-over' one?
This is the case even with both machines using Windows o/s... (it's
not due to Linux)... :$
You could buy one from Data-Parts, Sth side Moorhouse Ave ~ 150m West of Fitz-Geraldald Ave.
Let us re-cap to get this modem running. ( I haven't time to pore over dozens of somewhat dis-connected e-mails. )
What make and model is the computer on which Linux is to run?
The laptop is an "NEC Versa C160"
linux is already running, ubuntu.
What make and model is the modem?
built in motherboard by the looks of it:
here is the lspci -vn output
0000:00:02.6 Class 0703: 1039:7013 (rev a0) Subsystem: 1033:8216 Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5 I/O ports at 1000 I/O ports at 2400 [size=128] Capabilities: [48] Power Management version 2
1039:7013 is SiS chipset, but of course that is not enough, its the subsystem underneath that chipset that is important.
1033:8216 seems unknown in the pci id table (1033 is NEC surprise
surprise, what the rest is I do not know and do not seem to be able to
find out.) I suspect that if anything will work it will be slmodem or
pctel. I'll reconsider that once I see the output of scanModem.
The scanModem script will tell you. ( It is not possible to get _all_ WinModems to go under Linux )
yes which is why we are waiting for Vatsala to post back the details which he cannot do as he has no floppy drive, can't network to the windows box and the cd he wrote under linux is not read on the XP machine.
Have you got a diagnostic LiveCD ( such as Knoppix ) available?
knoppix will not boot on the laptop
ill said 'puter read DVDs? (because I have a DVD stuffed full of diagnostics)
Otherwise I can cut CDs as needed.
Hopefully will not be needed, unlikely to tell us more than scanModem. I'll probably see vatsala monday evening. I think he may have to accept that the modem just may not go under linux, we shall see. It definitely pays to check these things if you know you want to run linux, particularly a laptop where you cannot just bung in something else.
The particular NEC laptop is noit to be found in the usual places
(http://www.linux-laptop.net/ and http://www.tuxmobil.org/ .
A simple other option:
If the laptop still boots WinXP, go to Control Panel - System - Hardware Devices ..
Post us back exactly what the modem is listed as there - brand, model, number etc.
This info could guide us to suggest a distro which sets up the particular modem most easily.
(be ready to consider a PCMCIA modem purchase as well)
