I have my ThinkPad connected to the mains all the time at home *with no 
battery installed*.

The battery I leave in a drawer at around 40% charge.  If I know I'm going 
to use it I charge it and take it.  If it's short notice I know that 40% 
lasts a while.

Other than that, if the battery is installed at any particular time I will 
either use it or charge it.  I don't do much special with it if it's in, I 
just make sure that at home the charge is about right when it's put in the 
drawer.

I also have a car adaptor, which makes it less of a worry that I'll be 
unable to run the laptop or charge it up.
