(actually you are probably right, however also consider this situation:
an imaginary idiot named V has been posting inappropriate and annoyingly idiotic messages to the list for a fortnight. Several people independently decide he needs to be given an explanation on how to behave. They each send him a private message, a flame perhaps. None of them know that the other has spoken up, so all send him a private message. - maybe it would have been better if one person had flamed V to the list, then the others would know that the "job" had been done, and wouldn't feel the same need any more.)
If someone is behaving inappropriately in a public place, ie yelling and screaming at a movie theatre, then other people around them often tell them to shut up.
