Just to clarify.
There are 4 or 5 major types of WinModem which all work fine under Linux. The 
web site http://www.linmodems.org/ is a wonderful resource. The link at the 
very bottom of the page to http://start.at/modem is well worth following 
also.

Many, if not most, ISA modems are full hardware modems and work well with 
linux.
