Yes. Quite right. Good point.

Although many forms of information have no functional component (e.g. books, music, and video) so there is little to support.

But yes, software does need to be supported. And, as you point out, the goodwill of the programmer that led to the creation of the software in the first place is also often relied upon for support. Although, for widely used software, the community can become the support. Witness this very list.
