Not necessarily... some of the latest 2.6 based distros recognise them 
as SATA. Can't remember which one, though, and I've had to give that 
machine back! It's not Debian - I've just checked, so it'll be one of 
FC3, SuSE (the latest enterprise version ) or Mandrake (:

I'm getting a SATA-based machine tomorrow to play with under Ubuntu.
It *should* be hiding the disks behind a RAID card, but I'll try it 
natively as well, just to see what happens.
